The history of Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) began prior to the 1940’s, when it was an airport of 346 hectares with two runways. On June 11th 1942, the city of Sanford sold the airport to the U.S. Navy and it was converted into a naval air base. In 1968, the city of Sanford bought the airport from the Federal Government of the United States. In 1997, tbi was awarded the concession for the international passenger terminal followed by the concession for the domestic passenger terminal in 2000. Both terminals presently serve 1.7 million passengers annually.
Orlando Sanford International Airport is located 18 miles northeast of downtown Orlando in Sanford, Florida. Main roadway access is off of Lake Mary Blvd, eight miles east of Interstate-4 at exit 98 and two miles east of Toll Road 417 at exit 49.
In 2007, Orlando Sanford International came in the top 100 largest US airports in terms of total passengers and was among the top 50 busiest in terms of air traffic operations. Also, it was ranked the US’ 15th busiest transit terminal in terms of management of international visitors. In 2000, 2001 and 2004 it was rated as the airport with the highest growth rate in North America by the Airports Council International among airports with a million or more annual passengers.

Traffic at Orlando Sanford International airport is balanced between domestic and International, scheduled and Charter flights. The biggest charter flights operators at the airport are Thomas Cook and TUI Travel. The main airline for scheduled flights is Allegiant Air, while the main operators of scheduled international flights are Icelandair and Flyglobespan.
The airport has four runways, the largest measuring 2,600 metres; it also has 12 gates for commercial flights, a terminal for domestic flights, a terminal for international flights with a total area of 30,000 square metres, 1,000 surface car park spaces and a multi-storey car park with 704 spaces. The airport also has a cargo department operated by tbi Cargo.
